Grafting Locations

Not all of the places in the mouth are equally accessible. Depending on how much bone needs to be replaced, the dentist may access the site external to the mouth.

Once your jawbone has healed, you will have an abutment inserted into the affected area. Your dentist will cut open your gums, place the abutment on your implant, and then use your gums to cover the sides of the abutment.

You’ve got your abutment. Your gums have healed. All that’s left to do now is to have your artificial tooth placed.

Then, you will consult with your dentist to decide on whether you’d like a permanent or temporary implant. Temporary implants are removable. Permanent implants are not.

While the insertion of dental implants is typically a successful procedure, it’s not without its risks. Some problems you could encounter as a result of dental implants include the following.

Infection

A Closer Look at Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces are also known as “train-track” braces and for good reason. They consist of metal brackets connected by archwires and ligatures. In more difficult cases, patients also have to wear elastic bands and spacers.

Those intertwined metal components are what gives them a “railway” appearance.

Private or NHS?

The first thing to do when you are considering what kind of UK dental treatment and dentist you want is to ask yourself whether you want to go private or on the NHS.

Most dentists offer both services, so if you want to get your oral care on the NHS, then you can. Or if you want to go private, then you can also do that at your local dentistry.

There are advantages and disadvantages of both, so be sure to consider everything before you go ahead and decide which service is right for you.

Alternatively, you can call NHS 111, who will be able to help you in finding an urgent dental service.

The emergency dentist will only be able to provide you with treatment for the problem at hand and might advise you to go to your regular dentist for further treatments.

Individuals who are unable to get an emergency appointment should not contact their GP. And you should only visit A&E under serious circumstances, such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, and/or injuries of the face, mouth, or teeth.

Dental implants are popular today because they are the only permanent solution for missing teeth, but at what cost?

The procedures seem invasive, expensive, and healing time is prolonged.

With the future invested in the advancement of technology, here are some of the dental implant trends we can expect to see in the future of dentistry.

So what is a dental implant, exactly? It’s ultimately a false tooth.

All dental implants have a root, just like a natural tooth would. In most cases, the artificial root is a screw that has been attached to the jaw bone. This is the base of the implant.

They are cared for in the same way as natural teeth. There’s no extra step in taking care of implants, so they really are just replacement teeth.

The added benefit of implants is that most are 100% false, and cannot get cavities or decay like a natural tooth can.

How Does an Implant Work?

A dental implant begins with an exam and x-ray to determine the condition of the affected teeth and the surrounding jaw bone.

From there, the dentist will surgically implant the base into the jaw bone. This may sound quite intimidating, but it is an outpatient procedure that typically only takes a couple of hours from start to finish.

After the base of the implant has been inserted, the patient will begin a healing process. The base is not protruding from the gums at this point, and the focus is just on the jaw bone adhering to the metal implant. This bonding can take between three to six months, and the patient will wear a temporary denture during that time.

Once the bonding has completed, the dentist will perform the second surgery procedure. They simply uncover the tops of the implant base and insert a sheath around it to allow the gums to heal without covering the base.

At this point, the patient will be able to see the metal extending just above their gums, but they will continue to wear the temporary dentures. For the next few months, the dentist will be crafting and constructing the actual tooth part of the implant around the metal bases that have already been inserted.

Throughout the whole procedure, some exciting technology can be used. Let’s take a quick look at a few of those.

Yomi is an FDA approved technology to assist dental surgeons; rather than completely doing the work itself, like the Jetsons. The surgeons hold their surgical equipment as they normally would, and Yomi sends distinct physical and audio cues for the surgery being performed.

3D Printing

This is a cost-effective way of using a machine and blueprints to literally print out the perfect fit for the patient’s mouth.

While 3D printed materials are not made of ceramic or metal, they will still have longevity. The materials will be easily maintained with the same procedures as your a-typical implants. Regular brushing and flossing are all that would be required.

No, not like that episode from Doctor Who when a metal cylinder falls from the sky and turns everyone into zombies.

Nanotechnology in its simplest form is controlling molecules and atoms individually. What does that mean for dental implants?

Surgeons have the ability to implant this nanotechnology into the mouth to prevent and decrease the risk of infection. This is typically done at the time of the final implant.

The nanoparticles used in these implants allow for a smoother surface. Bacteria latches onto rough patches or gaps in the teeth. By using these particles in the implant material, they greatly diminish the rough surfaces, preventing the latching.

Let’s take a look at a few of the implants we can expect to be trending this year.

Mini Implants

These are your more affordable implants, simply because they are smaller and the procedure is less invasive.

Mini implants are becoming ever popular since they can take place in a short time span, and create an even more natural feeling in the mouth than traditional implants alone.
